The Science of Pause and Continuation, as one of the areas pertaining to the art of recitation [of the Qurʾān], plays an important role in understanding and conveying the purport of God’s words to the listeners. This is because if the recitation is paused at the correct place, the purport is also conveyed correctly to the listeners, otherwise a dissonance may come about in conveying the meaning. This science has a strong connection with the Science of Desinential Inflection, because it is the type of inflection that distinguishes the type of pause required.
The disjointed “Am” is one of the particles which affects the inflection of the following sentence. If the “Am” is a conjunction, the rule of pausing before it is different to what would apply if it was an inceptive particle. In this paper, we have attempted to study the types of disjointed “Am” particles and by taking one type as the primary form, we have determined the inflection of the sentence that follows it as well as the type of pause that is required before this sentence, bearing in mind its desinential inflection. In this way, we can come to a single conclusion regarding this particle.
