Objective: This study aims to identify and analyze the key components that make Qurʾānic recitation (tilāwah) impactful on listeners. The central research question explores the conditions and features that allow a recitation to resonate spiritually, emotionally, and aesthetically with the audience.
Method: A descriptive-analytical approach with library-based research was employed. Data were collected from classical sources including tafsīr, ḥadīth, historical accounts, and works on musicology and phonetics, as well as through qualitative analysis of recordings by prominent Qurʾān reciters (e.g., Muḥammad Rafʿat, Muṣṭafā Ismāʿīl, ʿAbdulbasit ʿAbdulsamad, and Muḥammad Ṣādiq Minshāwī). Components were extracted via content analysis and categorized based on theoretical and practical observations.
Findings: Five primary components were identified as critical to the impact of recitation:
Khushūʿ (Spiritual Reverence): Deep humility and consciousness of God that elevates recitation beyond technical execution. Exemplified by reciters such as Minshāwī, whose recitations evoke spiritual awe.
Variety (Tonality and Modulation): Utilization of the full vocal range and multiple melodic scales to maintain listener engagement. Rafʿat excels in tonal diversity, while Ismāʿīl demonstrates mastery in melodic modulation.
Adherence to Natural Emphasis (Nabr/Takyeh): Respecting the natural rhythm and stress of words, essential for accurate meaning transmission and aesthetic harmony. Notable in recitations of ʿAbdulbasit and Al-Bannā.
Cohesion (Continuity of Tone): Maintaining sonic and tonal consistency across consecutive passages to ensure the recitation is perceived as a unified whole.
Harmony (Alignment of Melody with Meaning): Selecting melodic modes compatible with the content of the verses—e.g., Maqām Ṣabā for verses of warning, Maqām Rāst for verses of glad tidings, and Maqām Ḥijāz for martial verses.
Conclusion: Impactful Qurʾānic recitation results from the artistic integration of the divine text with melodic expression, contingent upon adherence to the five components: khushūʿ, variety, natural emphasis, cohesion, and harmony. When these are observed, recitation functions not only as devotional practice but also as a culturally and emotionally engaging medium that communicates the spiritual message of the Qurʾān effectively. The study highlights the multi-dimensional nature of recitation as worship, art, and ethical expression, offering a comprehensive framework for reciters, instructors, and scholars.
