Objective: This study aims to systematically analyze and elucidate the foundational requirements, theoretical frameworks, and practical strategies for achieving authentic, innovative, and sovereign Quranic recitation (Ibdā‘) among female reciters in Iran and the Islamic world, thereby bridging the qualitative gap between female and male recitations.
Methodology: Employing a descriptive-analytical and comparative method, this research combines archival and documentary library data, detailed musicological and modal (maqām) analyses of preserved historical recordings of pioneering Egyptian female reciters (Munīrah ‘Abduh, Wadūdah Badr, Mabrūkah, Sakīnah Ḥasan, and Laylā Ḥasan) and contemporary Southeast Asian reciters, alongside structured expert interviews.
Findings: Findings reveal that genuine innovation requires transitioning consciously from mechanical imitation toward an autonomous melodic identity. This paradigm relies on four pillars: (1) thorough mastery of classical Egyptian maqāmāt and modal modulations; (2) scientific alignment of recitation style with female vocal physiology (natural vocal range, a 3:5 vital lung capacity ratio relative to males, and endocrine voice shifts); (3) departing from rigid, contest-driven stereotypes in favor of creative assembly (majlis) execution; and (4) meaning-centered recitation (vocal imagery) while avoiding superficial over-melodization.
Conclusion: Innovation (Ibdā‘) in female recitation is not accidental; it emerges from the organic synthesis of three core pillars: maqām knowledge, physiologically tailored vocal capability, and profound semantic comprehension. Revising adjudication criteria to prioritize artistic vocalization over rigid quantitative metrics is essential for fostering authentic excellence among female reciters.
