Objective: This research aims to elucidate the rationale and hermeneutical mechanism of enveloping one Quranic recitation beneath another, demonstrating how Divine wisdom utilized a protective "shell reading" to safeguard a politically and theologically sensitive "core reading" against deliberate textual corruption.
Methodology: Employing a descriptive-analytical and comparative methodology, this study systematically analyzes 140 major Sunni and Shiite exegetical works regarding verse 130 of Surah As-Saffat, evaluating the divergent readings through the theoretical lens of Quranic Laffafi (enveloping/protective layers).
Findings: The analysis categorizes exegetical perspectives into six distinct paradigms: under the reading "Il-Yasin", commentators identify the referent as "Prophet Elijah and his followers", "Elijah himself", or "Enoch (Idris)"; under the reading "Al-e-Yasin", interpretations include "Prophet Muhammad and his Progeny (Ahl al-Bayt)", "Elijah son of Yasin", and "believers in Surah Ya-Sin/the Quran". Applying the Laffafi model reveals that "Il-Yasin" serves as the outer shell reading, while "Al-e-Yasin" represents the submerged core reading. The textual architecture of prophetic greetings in Surah As-Saffat and lexical resonances with Surah Ya-Sin provide four robust connected textual indicators facilitating the transition from the shell to the core.
Conclusion: The multiplicity of recitations in this verse represents a deliberate, divinely orchestrated mechanism operating within natural causal laws to preemptively eliminate political motives for textual distortion (tahrif) concerning the honors of the Prophet's family, while ensuring that discerning, contemplative readers can uncover the profound core message.
