Abstract
In this article, after the concept of rapid reading is defined and its meaning in jurisprudence and tajwīd is explained, where recitation of the Qurʾān is classified into measured (tartīl), slow (taḥqīq), moderate (tadwīr) and rapid (ḥadar), it is demonstrated that rapid reading is one of the accepted types of recitation and observance of the rules of tajwīd in it is a requirement. Subsequently, by explaining the legal ruling pertaining to rapid recitation, the meaning of the technical term ‘hadhramah’ (hurried recitation) is explored both lexically as well as in jurisprudence and tajwīd, and narrations specifically pertaining to it are analyzed. It is shown that, contrary to popular opinion, the hurried recitation mentioned in the narrations is synonymous with the rapid recitation known in the science of tajwīd, and both of them have one and the same ruling.
