Abstract
Literary exegesis of the Qurʾān is based on many components, among them the attempt to evaluate and study different Qurʾānic readings. Accordingly, Zamakhsharī’s Tafsīr al-Kashshāf, as one of the literary exegeses of the Qurʾān, has also focused on the evaluation and study of different types of readings and has used this as a means to express its Muʿtazilī ideas. This essay examines the question of variant readings in Tafsīr al-Kashshāf by employing a descriptive-analytic method. The result shows that Zamakhsharī has taken different approaches to variant readings, such as: ‘using the variant readings to enrich his exegesis’, ‘explaining the lexical differences between the different readings of a verse’, ‘employing a variant reading to further his preference of interpretation of a verse’, and ‘appraising and evaluating the different readings’. The criteria he has used for evaluating and selecting readings include: ‘semantic maturity’, ‘spiritual symmetry’, ‘strength of meaning and beauty of expression’, and ‘rules of syntax’. However, the fundamental issue of the widespread variance of readings of a single verse, with arising problems such as accreditation of invalid readings, textual instability, distortions of meaning in the Qurʾān and confounding the audience, is considered a negative point in the Qurʾānic exegesis. Therefore, the first step for the exegete to understand the meaning of the verses is to establish the correct reading of the verses in order to use it as the basis of his exegesis.
