Abstract
In this article, the entry on ‘Tajwid’ which has been penned by Professor Nevad Katheran in the Qurʾān Encyclopedia, edited by Oliver Leaman, has been critically examined using a descriptive-analytic method, and some positive points and considerations on the same have been noted. Aside from its positive aspects, such as referring to some narrations that are agreed upon by both the main schools of thought in Islam with regard to the virtues of reading the Qurʾān and emphasizing the necessity of complementing language with reason and reflection while reading, there are also flaws in the structure, method, sources and content of this article. Problems such as: the author’s lack of expertise in the subject, no mention of the history and background of the subject, lack of references to original sources, and no indication of the vastness and scope of the disciple of tajwid and its relation to other sciences. At the same time, we have alluded to the shortcomings in the translation of this work and its publication without a preface or corrective footnotes.
