Abstract
One of the topics of interest in the science of Qurʾānic recitation, which has been addressed both in the Qurʾān and in the traditions, is the issue of tajwīd. Despite being an important subject that is related to the beautiful recitation of the Qurʾān, the necessity and purpose of tajwīd as outlined in the Qurʾān and traditions of the infallibles (a) has not been adequately researched. As a result, some have underestimated the necessity and even the fundamental requirement of this discipline in Qurʾānic recitation.
The primary question of the present paper is: based on the Qurʾān and Hadith, as well as other sources, what is the extent of the requirement of learning tajwīd and measured recitation? The methodology employed in this article is descriptive-analytical, and through the study of some of the religious teachings, including verses of the Qurʾān and sayings of the infallibles (a), the answer to the above question will be considered.
The six essentials of the Qurʾān are: (i) measured recitation, which is the same as tajwīd; (ii) the process of Qurʾānic revelation on the basis of measured recitation; (iii) reciting the Qurʾān with tranquility and deliberation; (iv) the proper recitation of the Qurʾān; (v) revelation of the Qurʾān in Arabic; and (vi) taking the Prophet (s) as a role model. The six non-Qurʾānic essentials include: (i) the way of the infallibles (a); (ii) the necessity of conveying the message that would remove neglect for Holy Qurʾān; (iii) the role of humility; (iv) jurisprudential requirements; (v) importance of reflection; and (vi) global requirements (such as promoting Qurʾānic culture, combating injustice, etc.). The conclusion of the present article is that the acquisition of knowledge of tajwīd is indeed seen to be of paramount importance.
