Abstract
The discussion on the principles of interpretation is one of the most important issues in the science of exegesis which has long been the focus of scholars of this discipline and has been explored even more in the present age. One set of principles of exegesis is rooted in the science of modes of reading. It is clear that the exegete must inevitably arrive at a theory in the field before embarking on his exegesis based on that theory. This essay seeks to explore the principles of reading-based exegesis and attempts to analyze, by means of a descriptive-analytic method, three potential principles of reading-based exegesis, namely: successively transmitted modes of reading, revelation of the Qurʾān upon seven ‘letters’, and limitation of the validity of the readings into one reading. The result of the study indicates that the claim of successively transmitted readings cannot be accepted, thus it cannot be a correct basis for the exegesis of the Qurʾān. Similarly, the traditions about the Qurʾān’s revelation in seven ‘letters’, in addition to being inauthentic in the Shīʾī sources, are also unsubstantiated in terms of chains of transmission and ambiguous in terms of meaning in the Sunni sources. As such, they can only be accepted in disputes arising from different accents and using them as a basis for exegesis founded on different modes of recitation does not seem correct. Limiting the valid and authoritative recitation to the reading of ʿĀsim also lacks sufficient evidence and is inconsistent with historical reports. Therefore, in his commentary, the exegete must consider other valid readings in addition to the reading of ʿĀsim, and must mention the multiple possible interpretations based on well-known and valid readings, which is itself considered to be a merit of exegesis
