Abstract
Using a descriptive-analytical approach, the present paper examines Ubay ibn Kaʿb’s personality and erudition, the peculiarities of his codex, and the level of influence it had on the reading of Ḥafṣ from ʿĀṣim as well as their compatibility. A holistic examination of the historical-narrative data and the information gleaned from the Qurʾānic sciences shows that not only did Ubay’s reading have an esteemed status among the scholars of the discipline of variant readings, but the Ahl al-Bayt (a) also considered his reading to be in accordance with theirs. The fact that the narration of six of the well-known Qurʾān reciters eventually goes back to his reading, clearly shows his widespread influence on the famous and prevalent reading. By examining the evidence for and against the compatibility of Ubay’s readings with the narration of Ḥafṣ from ʿĀṣim, one can claim that these two readings are very much in line with each other, as well as with the reading that is prominent among Muslims. There are reports of different surahs in the codex of Ubay when compared to the official codex of the Qurʾān, but these reports can be critiqued for their weak chains and anomalous meaning. However, the presence of many small differences between the codex of Ubay and the reading of Ḥafṣ from ʿĀṣim, due to the numerous reports in various sources, cannot be denied or justified.
