Abstract
Differences in reading is one of the most important and oldest Qurʾānic sciences about which Islamic scholars have always, throughout the history of Islam, held many divergent views. A number of them tried to limit the readings into seven types. From those who posited this kind of classification of readings into seven types were Amīn al-Islām Ṭabrisī and Abū al-Faḍl Rāzī. However, these two scholars differ with each other in the form of their classification.
The present study seeks to compare both perspectives using a library-based, descriptive-analytical approach, in addition to presenting the views of both scholars on this issue, by providing a framework for the classification of types of readings and in so doing, attaining complete understanding of all the aspects pertaining to the differences in the types of variant readings.
The findings of this study, in addition to presenting a more appropriate and comprehensive classification of the types of different readings, led to the conclusion that the most important difference between Ṭabrisī’s view and that of Imam Abū al-Faḍl Razi, pertains to the difference in accents, the overlapping of the categories of types, as well as the attention towards meaning or lack thereof.
