Abstract
The reciters of the Holy Qurʾān have disagreed on the method of recitation of some of the words of the Qurʾān. Scholars of the Qurʾān and its exegesis have always expressed their views on the phenomenon of variant readings. Shaykh Ṭūsī, the great doyen of scholarship, was a Shīʿī jurist and exegete of the fifth century. In his commentary, al-Tibyān, he recounts the variant readings of the Qurʾān reciters and explains the validity of each of the readings. Although Shaykh Ṭūsī accepts the notion of variant readings of the Holy Qurʾān from the companions of the Holy Prophet (s), the seven major reciters as well as other reciters, the fundamental question is: what is his view concerning of the validity of the modes of reading that have been narrated by the reciters and what conditions does he consider in order to distinguish valid readings from invalid and incorrect ones? Based on a comprehensive search in Shaykh Ṭūsī’s exegesis al-Tibyān and a study of his statements concerning the variant readings and his appraisal of the same, we arrive at the conclusion that Shaykh Ṭūsī uses four criteria as the basis for distinguishing valid readings from invalid ones: readings that are contrary to the established and accepted rules of the Arabic language in terms of vocabulary, syntax and grammar, anomalous and odd readings, readings that have been proscribed by the infallibles, and readings that contradict the customary script of the prevalent text of the Qurʾān are considered invalid, and recitation of the Qurʾān according such readings is deemed incorrect.
