Abstract

Objective: This study aims to conceptualize and systematically articulate the constituent components of "masterful Qur’ānic recitation" within the intellectual framework of the Supreme Leader. It critically addresses formalistic paradigms that reduce recitation exclusively to vocal and melodic technique while overlooking its epistemic, contemplative, and formative potential.
Methodology: Employing a qualitative research design, the study conducted thematic content analysis following the six-phase model of Braun and Clarke. The research corpus comprised 42 purposively selected thematic excerpts from the official discourse database (khamenei.ir) spanning 1989 to 2017, identified via key descriptors (tilāwah, qirā’ah, tartīl, and qārī). Semantic paragraphs served as the units of analysis. Trustworthiness was established through Lincoln and Guba’s criteria alongside an inter-coder agreement rate of 85%.
Findings: Systematic coding yielded 97 initial codes, 21 basic themes, 5 organizing themes, and 1 global theme: "Masterful Recitation as a Communicative-Guiding Act." The five constitutive domains are: (1) Technical-Performative Domain (accurate articulation, tajwīd, melodic precision, and meaning-congruent delivery); (2) Epistemic-Semantic Domain (comprehension of divine vocabulary, active contemplation [tadabbur], and avoidance of hasty reading); (3) Contemplative-Heartfelt Domain (spiritual humility [khushū‘], presence of heart, and direct personal engagement with revelation); (4) Communicative-Impactful Domain (penetration of meanings into the listener’s soul); and (5) Formative-Practical Domain (fostering intimate attachment, moral refinement, and practical commitment to Qur’ānic guidance).
Conclusion: Masterful recitation is an integrative, meaning-centered, and contemplation-driven practice wherein acoustic beauty serves as an instrument for delivering divine guidance and fostering existential transformation. This conceptual model provides a robust foundation for reforming pedagogical curricula, competition adjudication criteria, and Qur’ānic assembly programs.
