Abstract One of the important elements in influencing listeners and conveying the precepts of the Qurʾān to them is the beautiful expression, sound and tone of the Qurʾānic words and letters. As such, melody is considered one of the important elements of Qurʾānic recitation, the origin of which is to be found in the earliest days of Islam. When we turn to the life of Holy Prophet of Islam (s), we find that when the Holy Qurʾān was revealed, the Prophet himself gave much importance to its recitation with a beautiful and melodious recitation. The infallible Imams (a), such as Imam al-Sajjād (a), Imam al-Bāqir (a) and Imam al-Kāẓim (a) also recited the Quran in a beautiful, melodious voice. In the present era, melodious recitation is accepted as one of the forms of Qurʾānic recitation among the reciters of the Qurʾān. This type of recitation, in addition to using different musical notes and tones, also focuses on the correct pronunciation of words and letters, rules of pause and continuation as well as different rules and principles of recitation. Jurists have different views on the legality or prohibition of singing and melody. Many have defined it to mean reciting the Qurʾān in a pleasant voice and melodious tone while adhering to the principles and values of the Qurʾān. This was something that was accepted by Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn Masʿūd, and some of the other Companions and Successors, and it is also deemed to be an accepted principle in the contemporary era among the Qurʾān reciters. This paper seeks to examine, in a descriptive-analytical manner, the historical approach to melodious recitation, its essential nature, its status and importance, as well as its legality.
